Well established and managed technical regulations, rules and accordance valuation proceedings are essential to facilitate the international trade, since are important to promote the consumers’ reliance on the quality of the food. That can be useful to improve the exports performance.

However, if orientations are peccaries, the technical exigencies can hamper the competitiveness of the international trade, becoming a non-tariff barrier of considerable impacts.

More and more, several countries discuss means to guarantee a product that attend to the specifications of a given client or legislation. The perspective is that those specifications will get a huge economic expression in a few years, especially if explored as “technical barrier” and “international trade”.

The evolution and identification of the forms assumed by the technical exigencies in the international trade, besides the calculation of its costs in terms of Brazilian exports that left to be accomplished, are the focus of the researches developed by Cepea since December 2004.

Those researches have been developed in partnership with ITAL (Institute of Food Technology), of the Sao Paulo State government, the INMETRO (National Institute of Metrology, Standardization and Industrial Quality) and with the SIQUIM (System of Information about the Chemistry Industry), of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
