Last days, the good weather conditions slightly intensified planting activities of the 2007/08 corn crop in the Southern region of Brazil. According to the Seab (Parana Agriculture Secretariat), until Oct 8th, planting activities reached 42 percent of the total area estimated in Paraná state. To keep this scenario positive, however, it is necessary a higher volume of rain from now on.
Regarding the Conab (National Company for Food Supply), the Brazilian corn cultivated area should reach from 9,7 to 9,9 thousand hectares in the 2007/08 crop, increasing between 2.3 and 4.5 percent over the previous crop.
As for trades, the Brazilian corn market moved at a slow pace, pressuring prices down. The ESALQ/BM&F Index (Campinas region) dropped 2.3 percent in Real in this first fortnight of October, closing at 26.69 reals or 14.71 dollars per bag of 60 kilos on Monday.
