Index hits the highest nominal level in the series of Cepea

Cepea, June 16, 2021 – The slightly higher demand, the delay of sugarcane crushing in central-southern Brazil and the lower productivity of sugarcane crops in that region have been underpinning the prices for crystal sugar in São Paulo State (SP).

Thus, on June 15, the CEPEA/ESALQ Index closed at 117.26 BRL (23.25 USD)/50-kilo bag, 1.2% up from that on May 31 and the highest nominal level in the series of Cepea, which began in April 1997 for this product.

Abroad, prices for demerara sugar increased too, influenced by the current low productivity of Brazilian sugarcane crops, the increase in the production of ethanol and the reduction in that of sugar in central-southern Brazil. Data from Unica (Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association) indicate that, in the 2021/22 season (from April to May 16), 55.53% of the sugarcane processed in Brazil was allocated to the production of ethanol, against 54.81% in the same period last season.
