Brazilian sugar prices decreased 5.23 percent in September, pressured by the larger supply and decreasing futures for the commodity in NY and London. The CEPEA/ESALQ crystal sugar Index averaged 17.41 dollars per bag of 50 kilos on September 29.
The sugarcane crop processing should be completed by the end of November and the first quince of December in the Center-Southerner of Brazil, the major sugarcane producer, accounting for 85 percent of the total production.
According to Unica (São Paulo Agroindustry Union), sugarcane production should reach 370.6 million tons in 2006/07 season in the Center-Southerner of Brazil, a volume 9.3 percent superior from the previously season (339 million), but 1.2 percent inferior in relation to the last estimative of 375 million.
In the international market, futures for sugar reached the minimal levels in almost one year in September, but recovered points in the last days of the month.
