New contract deals help small growers

After more than three months of negotiation, Brazilian citrus growers and juice processors finally reached a deal about the bonus to be paid in 2006/07 for long term contracts settled in the past years. It was fixed a minimal price of 4.00 dollars per box of 40.8 kilos for those who had contracts at lower levels than this.

The deal also considers the higher orange juice future prices in New York Board of Trade (Nybot) and the repassing of those gains to prices paid to growers. In general terms, it is possible to conclude that the agreement will be helpful especially to small growers, who had quite low contracts considering the current market situation.
