Pera devaluates 13 percent in a slow market

In general terms, most part of orange varieties (in natura) is not mature yet, which has been limiting trades in Brazil. In this context, pera orange averaged 15.96 reals or 7.58 dollars per box of 40.8 kilos (in tree) on April 30th, down 12.8 percent over March 30th.

According to the IEA (Institute of Agricultural Economy), the 2007/08 orange crop in Sao Paulo state should reach 360.1 million boxes of 40.8 kilos, increasing 3.4 percent over the previous season. The good weather conditions during fruits development provided higher productivity in relation to the last crop. The IEA also registered an enlargement of the planted area, from 659.64 thousand hectares, in the 2006/07, to 668.6 thousand hectares in the 2007/08.

The international orange juice market keeps running with the good perspective for the 2007/08 crop in Florida. It is important to consider, however, that there are no updated figures about the number of trees in that state - the most important information to evaluate the orange juice future behavior at the New York Board of Trade (Nybot). A new register of plants in Florida should be published only in September.
