Stable prices in the end of the year with a record production

Brazilian sugar market has been moving at a slow pace, since a great deal of mills is closed now - for vacation. Even so, some trades have been settled, involving small volumes. Prices kept almost unchanged, with the CEPEA/ESALQ Index (Sao Paulo state) averaging 17.14 dollars per bag of 50 kilos this Wednesday, December 27th.

Comparing the average prices of this season - from the beginning of April to November - over the same period of 2005, the CEPEA/ESALQ Index was around 42 percent higher this year - in real terms.

According to Unica (Sao Paulo Sugar Cane Agroindustry Union), during the 2006/07 crop it was processed 371 million tons of sugarcane in the Center-Southerner of Brazil. This record volume is 10.1 percent superior to the one of the previous crop. Sugar production totaled 25.8 million tons (increase of 17 percent). For ethanol, the volume produced reached 15.9 billion liters (up 11.2 percent).
