Steer rises more than 9 percent in May

Brazilian steer supply kept low in May, boosting the prices. The ESALQ/BM&F Index (Sao Paulo state) increased 9.3 percent from April 30th to May 30th, closing at 84.77 reals or 52.00 dollars per arroba (15 kilos) on Friday, May 30th. In the past, the higher volumes of animals normally marked May.

At the end of May, more ten Brazil's states plus the Distrito Federal were recognized by the World Animal Health Organization (OIE) as being free from FMD (Foot and Mouth Disease) with vaccination. The states are: Bahia, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Sergipe, Tocantins, besides the Distrito Federal.

For calf, prices kept reaching consecutive records, accumulating an increase of more than 16 percent in Real from April 30th to May 30th. On Friday, May 30th, the ESALQ/BM&F Index (Mato Grosso do Sul state) closed at 666.53 reals or 409.42 dollars, rising 16.08 percent in Real over April 30th.

In the wholesale market of Sao Paulo city, the steer carcass averaged 5.19 reals or 3.18 dollars per kilo this Friday, increasing more than 11 percent in Real during May.

For the living hog, prices received by farmers averaged 3.10 reals or 1.90 dollar per kilo on May 30th in Sao Paulo state, increasing 18.2 percent in Real over April 30th. In the wholesale market of Sao Paulo capital, the hog carcass upped 11 percent in Real during the same period, at 4.34 reals or 2.66 dollars per kilo on May 30th. The upward trend keeps linked to the higher consumption in this period of lower temperatures in several regions of Brazil. Moreover, the high prices levels of the other meats also reinforced the increasing demand of the hog carcass.

Likewise, in the poultry market, prices moved up. The frozen meat prices increased 4 percent in Real between April 30th and May 30th, at 2.76 reals or 1.69 dollar per kilo on Friday; for the chilled one, the raise was of 9 percent in Real, at 2.59 reals or 1.59 dollar per kilo, both in the wholesale market of Sao Paulo capital - the most important Brazilian consumer reference.
