Weather conditions help fruits maturation

Low temperatures have helped orange maturation in Sao Paulo state during May. The demand, on the other hand, normally reduces in this period of the year, due to the cold weather. In this context, growers decreased prices to trade at a better pace. On May 31st, the hamlin (early variety) averaged 8.91 reals or 4.64 dollars per box of 40.8 kilos (in tree), dropping 21.5 percent in Real over April 30th. Pera orange was traded at 12.45 reals or 6.48 dollars per box of 40.8 kilos (in tree), decrease 22 percent in Real in the same period.

Some Brazilian processors should start to crush oranges from the 2007/08 crop season from the beginning of June on.

Due to the global deficit of orange juice, some growers bet on higher prices in the spot market (delivered on citrus plant) during this season, as it happened in the previous crop. For a while, the fruit delivered on citrus plant averaged 7.75 reals or 4.04 dollars per box of 40.8 kilos on May 31st, dropping 5.5 percent over April 30th.
