With hydrous prices on the rise, sugar advantage decreases

Cepea, August 5 2019 – The consecutive price rises for hydrous ethanol and the slight price drops for crystal sugar in São Paulo State reduced the advantage of sugar against ethanol in late July. According to Cepea calculation, between July 22 and 26, sugar remunerated 9% more than hydrous ethanol did – against 16% in the previous week. Compared to anhydrous ethanol, crystal sugar remunerated 7% more – against 11% in the previous week.

Still according to Cepea calculations, between July 22 and 26, anhydrous ethanol remunerated 3% more than hydrous did – in the previous week, that ratio was at 5%.

The boost came from higher demand. Distributors continued to purchase large volumes of ethanol, in São Paulo and other states from central-southern Brazil. As for refineries, more sellers were active in the spot market, trying to take advantage of the current price levels, which are appealing, considering this time of the crop.

Between July 22 and 26, the CEPEA/ESALQ Index for hydrous ethanol closed at 1.7157 BRL per liter (São Paulo, with zero ICMS and zero PIS/Cofins), 7% up compared to that between June 24 and 28. As for anhydrous ethanol, the CEPEA/ESALQ Index closed at 1.8712 BRL per liter (zero PIS/Cofins), 2.4% up in the same comparison.

The ESALQ/BM&FBovespa Index for hydrous ethanol delivered in Paulínia (SP) closed at 1,777.50 BRL per cubic meter (without taxes) on July 31, 5.7% up compared that on June 28.
