Methodology

Product specification: weaned calf, male, Nellore breed, aged between 8 and 12 months; collected values refer to trades closed in the physical market – prices paid to producers;
Unit of measurement/currency: live animal (per animal); the average is originally calculated in Real, but it is also released in American dollar. It is a simple conversion of the value in Real to dollars – commercial exchange rate, selling price at 4:30 p.m. (Brasilia time);
Delivery: on farm (no freight included);
Region of reference: (animal origin) São Paulo State, divided into 4 regions: Presidente Prudente, Araçatuba, Bauru and São José do Rio Preto;
Calculation: arithmetic average of calf prices in the main growing regions of São Paulo State;
Discount rate: Term prices are converted into cash prices by discounting the CDI - Interbank Deposit Certificate rate
Frequency: daily. The values, however, remain in the sample for 7 days;
Historic:  since March 1994;
Agents surveyed by Cepea: Cattle growers, offices of cattle sales and purchases, stockbrokers and auction agencies.
