The Cattle Team: beyond the Index

The Cattle Team works beyond the elaboration of the CEPEA/B3 Index, which is formed by data from São Paulo state. From Monday to Friday, the 11 professionals of the Team (who are supported by other groups at Cepea) gather information with cattle farmers, players from slaughterhouses and cattle purchase and sale offices from other 11 states in Brazil, besides São Paulo (Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Goiás, Tocantins, Pará, Rondônia, Bahia and Acre). The Team also calculates and releases average prices of male and female animals that are ready to slaughter, calf and lean cattle in 24 important producing regions.

The gathering of regional information and the Index have started practically at the same time, resulting in a vast database, which allows important analyses. Some regions have data since the 1990’s. In some areas such as Paraná, Mato Grosso do Sul and Minas Gerais, the database is 26 years old. As for the ESALQ/BM&FBovespa calf price Index series, it has been released since 2000. In 2001, Mato Grosso and Goiás became part of Cepea’s data gathering, as well as Rio Grande do Sul and Rondônia in 2002. In 2006, after some years of research, the Team has started to release prices in Tocantins, and, in 2010, in Bahia, Acre and Pará.

Besides the price gathering for fed and lean cattle and calf, the Team also collects and releases values for beef (carcass, hindquarter, forequarter and thin flank) in the wholesale market of the Greater São Paulo – the database has started in 2001.

Every piece of information produced by the Cattle Team is a consistent basis to perform periodical analyses for national and international news agencies, to players who exchange information with Cepea and for the media.

Besides the analyses, the Cattle Team performs other studies to meet specific demands or even to improve the knowledge of a specific aspect of the sector. Another important characteristic of the Team that favors the information spreading is the professional qualification. The Cattle Team has qualified roughly 300 people since 1994. Due to the experience at Cepea, many of these professionals were able to have job opportunities in banks, universities, the government and others, in Brazil and in the international scenario.
